The reporting cycle: trial balance to disclosures

Seven stages every transaction passes through, each handing a defined output to the next.

  1. Trial Balance

The starting point: account balances before any treatment. You check that it balances and review it line by line.

Output: Opening balances ready for analysis
  2. IFRS Analysis

You read each line, identify the standard that governs it and its requirements — where the standard turns from text into a decision.

Output: A map of line → standard
  3. Journal Entries

You translate the required treatment into debit and credit entries, at the right amounts and the right timing.

    Output: Documented, justified entries
  4. Year-End Adjustments

Depreciation, amortisation, provisions, expected credit losses, and inventory, revenue and tax adjustments.

    Output: Twelve adjustments applied
  5. Adjusted Trial Balance

You merge the entries and adjustments and rebalance — these are the balances the statements are built on.

    Output: Final, confirmed balances
  6. Financial Statements

Profit or loss, financial position, cash flows, and changes in equity.

    Output: Four interlocking statements
  7. Notes & Disclosures

You tie each disclosure to its standard and complete the presentation requirements — only then is the report complete.

    Output: A complete financial report

It is a cycle, not a straight line: this year’s disclosures become next year’s opening balances, and an error at any stage carries forward.

The application method:

Identify → Apply IFRS → Calculate → Journal Entry → Adjust → Report

We follow the method on a single worked example all the way down: a machine depreciated under IAS 16.

  1. Identify

    What exactly is this item?

Worked exampleA machine costing 500,000, useful life 10 years, bought at the start of the year.
  2. Apply IFRS

Which standard governs it, and what does it require?

Worked exampleIAS 16 — the asset is depreciated over its useful life on a basis reflecting the consumption of its benefits.
  3. Calculate

    What is the right number?

    Worked exampleStraight line: 500,000 ÷ 10 = 50,000 depreciation for the year.
  4. Journal Entry

    What is the entry?

Worked exampleDr Depreciation expense 50,000  |  Cr Accumulated depreciation 50,000.
  5. Adjust

How does the trial balance change?

Worked exampleCarried into the adjusted trial balance: a new 50,000 expense, and a carrying amount of 450,000.
  6. Report

Where does it surface in the statements?

Worked exampleThe expense in profit or loss, the carrying amount in financial position, with the IAS 16 disclosure.
